Storm King Art Center seeks Program Assistants to support Children and Families programs in the 2024 season. Storm King offers a robust calendar of drop-in, hands-on programs for children and their families visiting the Art Center. These programs are led by a variety of professional arts educators, artists, scientists, and naturalists. Programs are designed to encourage open-ended, intergenerational, creative play and to enrich visitors’ experience of the Art Center. Programs occur every other Sunday during Storm King’s season beginning May 12. During peak fall season, October through mid-November, programs are offered every Sunday. Programs typically run from 12-3pm.

Program Assistants will support these programs by assisting the lead educators, transporting supplies, greeting visitors, and documenting the program. Full day and half day shifts are available. Opportunities may also be available to staff programs in the community, or to work other public programs at Storm King as needed.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

• Pre-program prep:
  • Meet with Education Coordinator in advance of each program
• Day of set-up:
  • Arrange tables and chairs in the program area as needed and ensure the area is clean and organized during and after the program ends
  • Greet the program leader(s) and assist with transportation of materials to the program site
• During a program:
  • Greet visitors, explain instructions, assist with supplies, keep the workspace tidy, and answer questions.
  • Take photographs to document of the program with Storm King’s camera.
  • Be knowledgeable about Storm King Art Center and prepared to answer visitors’ general questions.
• Post-program reflection:
  • Complete a brief summary of the program including an estimated number of attendees.

Other Responsibilities and Duties

• For programs in the community, Program Assistants may transport tents, tables, and/or supplies to the program location.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Experience in a role with direct engagement with youth audiences
• Experience making art and/or leading hands-on activities
• Knowledge of modern and contemporary art
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Commitment to inclusion and access
• Impeccable reliability
• Ability to work independently and be nimble in response to problems

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in Visual Art, Art History, Museum Studies, Education, or related field, or active artistic practice with exhibition history
• Knowledge of or interest in landscape and ecology
• Fluency in Spanish or ASL a plus
• CPR/Red Cross First Aid training a plus

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Ability to maneuver outdoors, in all weather conditions, on 500 acres of hills, grass, and gravel paths
• Ability to be outdoors for long periods of time during programs
• Ability to use a two-way radio
• Frequently stands for long periods of time
• Occasional lifting, stooping, or bending
• Ability to carry and pull 20lbs

Compensation and Benefits

The hiring hourly rate is $19.50 per hour. This temporary, non-exempt position is not eligible for paid time off or other benefits, other than those required by law, which includes NYS Sick Leave.
